How I cancelled a $500 WordPress hosting plan

I got an email from DreamHost that my 3 year hosting plan was about to renew for $504. This hosting was for wordpress and very old sites. It’s not worth paying this much for hosting that I no longer need.

Here’s what I did:

  1. Backed up WordPress databases and uploads
  2. Crawled every URL on both blogs and saved the status codes, so I could check nothing broke later
  3. Converted this blog to Markdown with wordpress-export-to-markdown and built it with Astro. A new post is now just a new .md file
  4. Deployed all three sites to Netlify and pointed DNS at them
  5. Cancelled the $500 hosting plan

I’ve had this hosting plan for a while, and I’m glad I was able to migrate off this hosting plan I don’t need anymore.
